Rafael Nadal resisted a courageous defense from Novak Djokovic to win his ninth title at the Italian Open with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory over the world's No. 1 in Rome.

The Spaniard crushed tired Djokovic early in the game to record the very first "bagel" (6-0 win) between the two players in their 54 fights to date.

Djokovic played better by winning the second run and beat four points before finding his own opportunity in the last match to reach the required level.

But Nadal, 11 times French Open champion, immediately broke the game and showed tenacity to end his Serbian opponent, who threw a last volley of setbacks in goal.

Djokovic and Nadal will be seeded No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in the second major of the year at Roland Garros later this month.
