Montgomery declared himself a draft candidate following his freshman year at Iowa State, where he played 37 games in three seasons, collecting 2925 yards and 26 touchdowns in 624 runs and 71 passes for 582 yards. .
In terms of his skills on the football field, Montgomery was compared to Browns running back Kareem Hunt, who led the NFL in the race in 2017 rushing for the Chiefs. Nagy was Hunt's offensive coordinator in Kansas City that season, while Matt Campbell coached Hunt at Toledo and Montgomery at Iowa State.
"Yes, there are similarities, of course," said Nagy. "You look at them and their size. You see how they run between tackles. They are physical. They both run angry. And the other link is probably related to the background of the coaches they both had. It's an easy tie there.
"But [Montgomery] will be his own person. I think the best part of David is the fact that the number of discussions we had with him is to determine who he is and it will be only David Montgomery, no one else. I think it's really important. We love it at home and I'm excited to really see where it's going. "
During the preliminary process, Montgomery interviewed the Bears at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis and was one of 30 potential candidates to visit Halas Hall.
"He is a person as real as he is, very authentic, very passionate," said Nagy. "He came in and we sat down and talked. I just like digging a little of their personal history. When you were a child, what position did you play, what did you do? We all do it, but it's just beginning. The first thing he did was get up from the chair like a major interview and explain everything about himself.
"Everything he talked about was extremely passionate. And there was a story behind her. There was a "why" and I believed everything he said. There was no script to that. It was real and the stories that he had not only on the field but also off the field, they make you understand what this kid has lived. And you appreciate that. You know that he has gone through many hardships and that someone has been put to the test in this area to see how he reacts. This kid overcame that.
Montgomery joins a deep and talented Bears backyard that also includes electrifying playmaker Tarik Cohen and the acquisition of freelance agent Mike Davis, as well as the seventh round pick of the Kerrith Whyte Jr. Round.
"They are all a little different, and I like that," Nagy said. "I think it allows us, as coaches, to know what guys are doing well. We have a good idea at the moment, but since Mike is new and David arrives, then Kerrith arrives, they all have a slightly different mix, with exactly what it is. So we will test it and see and feel it, but it gives you options.
"These are all weapons. They can play at all levels, you feel good where they are. As coaches, we need to know exactly what it is, then there are few keys, so we have to balance that. It's the hardest part, but it's a lot easier to do with this type of guy with different strengths.
