The Tour de France cycling race on Tuesday was briefly interrupted after French farmers tried to block the road.

A few kilometers from the beginning of the race between Carcassonne and Bagneres-de-Luchon, in the south-west of France, French farmers protesting against a decline in their financial support attempt to block the Tour de France by charging hay bales on the road.

French police dispersed the protest by firing tear gas before the finish of the runners, according to the television channel Tour de France France Télévisions. The riders had to slow down when they reached the stage and the pictures show them rubbing their eyes after going through the demonstration.

About 23,000 French policemen are deployed this year to ensure the safety of the event cyclist, according to a statement issued by the French Ministry of the Interior at the beginning of the month. In addition, since 2016, the French anti-terrorist police have been mobilized to reinforce security during the three-week cycling race.

In July 2016, a man deliberately drove his truck into a crowd of people celebrating July 14 in Nice, killing 85 people. This attack demonstrated the vulnerability of the crowds during outdoor celebrations and led to increased security for this type of events.
