At a meeting of the New Hempstead Democratic Club last week, State House Speaker Earlene Hooper, Democrat No. 2 of the Assembly, cited the policy of "Planting" in the democrat challenge against her for her seat
. On July 26, Hooper said his main challenger for the 18th District Assembly, Taylor Raynor, was a "witness" to the chairman of the Nassau County Democratic Committee, Jay Jacobs. She said that Jacobs could not find a Democrat to challenge, so he found a person without a party to oppose the long-time incumbent.
"I am going to Albany and I am fighting for my people, and then I come back and I have to fight with [my my people," Hooper told the crowd. Post, Jacobs said that Hooper's comments were "unbalanced" and that his speech cost him the party's official approval for the September primary: "I've supported Earlene in the past" Jacobs told the Post. I can not stand anyone who says these things. It is likely that I will support Taylor.
Ms. Hooper represents the 18th district of the Assembly for decades, since she was first elected in a special election in 1988. She is the first wife vice president.
