Kearsney College Choir wins gold at World Choir Games

Under the direction of Marshell Lombard, the choir competed in three categories, winning gold in the categories "Scenic Pop" and "Music of Spirit and Faith", as well as silver in the category "Scenic Folklore".

Known as the "Olympics for Choirs", over 300 choirs and 16,000 attendees of 62 countries are competing this year Games, which ends in Tshwane on Saturday (14 ). The world's largest competition for non-professional choirs takes place every two years, and it is the first time that the Games are held in Africa.

There are two competitive sections: the champions (the highest level of competition for choirs who have already proved their competence internationally) and the Open (choirs without international experience). In each of them, there are 27 categories.

Kearsney College is produced in three categories of the Champions section, winning two gold medals and one silver.

After the announcement, Kearsney's director, Elwyn van den Aardweg, said he was extremely proud of the exploits of the boys. The choir has now won 15 gold and seven silver medals at the World Choir Games since 2000.

His recent international successes also include two gold medals. last year Oriental Concentus International Choral Festival in Singapore; the City of Vienna Prize at 33 International Festival of Youth and Music; and an invitation to represent Africa at the Festival of Rhythms of a single World Music at the United Nations European Headquarters in Geneva

Last Week , the choir was ovationate four performances at the Grahamstown Arts Festival before the World Choir Games.

"We think it's mainly for making music," said Van den Aardweg.

"It was wonderful to see so many South African choirs participating in a world event and the number of choirs from that country gaining their category."

The Kearsney Choir has a growing international following, with supporters in America, Asia, Europe and the rest of Africa; and was hailed as a great centerpiece of the rainbow nation. This is not the traditional school choir, but a group of incredibly vibrant boys who perform their characteristic mix of classical, pop and native music.
