African leaders took turns praising the former executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA ) and Pioneer President of the National Youth Corps Service (NYSC), the late Adebayo Adedeji, at a funeral service in Ijebu-Ode, in the state of Ogun, yesterday
Adedeji, who was the Asiwaju of Ijebuland, died on 25 April at the age of 87 years.
Key leaders at the funeral service held at the Anglican Church of Our Lady of the Savior Church, Ijebu-Ode, included the President of Namibia, Hage Geingob; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; the former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon; Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State
They noted that late Adedeji has devoted his life positively to serving Nigeria and the African continent in general.
Osinbajo, in his tribute, recalled the immense c contribution of the late Adedeji to the post-war planning and reconstruction of the national economy, describing it as an "unusual human being".
The Vice President described Adedeji as an impartial and objective person, whose death was announced in several languages because of the various abilities he had served at different times, nationally and internationally.
"Professor Adedeji was a remarkable African, he was deeply involved in the integration of Africa, he did a great job in projecting Africa, we are proud of all that we have. He did it during his lifetime He was one of the most unusual human beings. "
In addition, Namibian President Hage Geingob described the late Adedeji as "a mentor, brother and defender of Africa's economic independence."
Geingob extolled the rare virtue of the deceased as a true African "Obasanjo, in his tribute, stated that the deceased was a friend, a brother, a trusted ally and a co-resident in the development vineyard, while that Gowon stated that the late Adedeji was a "Credit to Nigeria, to Africa and to the African race."
The former archbishop of the Lagos ecclesiastical province of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Bishop Adebayo Akinde, in his sermon, said that Adedeji left a legacy of service for Nigerians to emulate.
Akinde said that the renowned economist was truly a great nationalist and that many Nigerians in positions of authority have failed their generations because of greed, noting that the ex-Executive Secretary of ECA "As a humanity, we should start asking ourselves what kind of inheritance we will let derr It is important for us to think seriously about the kind of legacy we leave behind.
