SEATTLE – A ninth inning ensured misery. The Mariners employ the best baseball player, leading some 40 major league leaders and 87 strikeouts in the AHL. Now, Edwin Diaz could only watch from his paddock while a moribund attack felt an awakening that was not to manifest.
Max Stassi hit a single to start this eighth-round uprising. The Astros had not produced a blow in four innings. Alex Colome hesitated and Houston restored together appearances of quality dish.
Josh Reddick started the heat with a flyout of 10 pitches. After being late 0-2, George Springer encouraged a two-shot walk. Stassi took second place – the first Astro to stay there in seven innings.
Alex Bregman, the most regular man of an alignment that was so in need of a jolt, has arrived. He saw six sites and ran the full account. Colome cut a fastball in the box of the other batters. Bregman waved.
He walked slowly towards the pirogue. The ninth inning was predictable. Diaz did a quick job of 3-4-5 Houston lifeline strikers to finish a 2-0 win in which they produced four singles ..

For the first time this season, the Astros have lost five consecutive games. Their lead in the American League West is now only three. The mastery of Gerrit Cole was scuttled and winger Mariners James Paxton emerged the winner.
Cole managed a smooth run through 5 manches innings. He scored six of the first nine batters he faced, spinning a pristine slider while throwing fast balls between 98 and 99 mph with relative ease. His first three strikeouts ended with sliders.
For four rounds, no sailor reached the base. To start the fifth, Cole pulled a complete curve. He poked Nelson Cruz's elbow, spoiling all the aspirations of a perfect game.
A sixth cruel round did the same for a non-hitter. With two of distance, Segura sent a shot in the middle. Yuli Gurriel, the second-goal scorer attempting to fill José Altuve's gaping gap, tucked to his right. Gurriel plunged, secured the field and shot Tyler White an arrow.
Segura beat the pitch of one step. Cole pointed to Gurriel as a thank you for his effort, settled on the rubber band and made a mistake. With its range mired in such discomfort, it has proved fatal.
An incisive curve of one blow to Denard Span is slightly corrected. The three-hole hitter slapped him for one. Cruz has arrived for a third look at Cole. He waved weakly at three sliders in the first run, Cole's second of eight punches.
Cole returned to the field that carried him here. He swayed a slider to start the fight. Cruz won on the third baseline, a double that marked the two men and gave Paxton all the cushion he needed.
A back injury damaged Paxton's rotation. His departure Monday was his first in 18 days. The awesome southpaw operated on a limited number of shots, only around 85 or 90 as he stepped back to lead a rotation with post-season aspirations.
It took 82 to sail through seven innumerable sleeves. The Astros have collected three singles. Two were in the first inning, consecutive shots from Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel that allowed Evan Gattis to take advantage on the plate.
Paxton offered a fast 1-1 ball that went up. Gattis' massive hands remained inside on the baseball, which he climbed into the Seattle night. He sailed so high and landed so far in the second deck of the left field stands that it was indistinguishable if that shot was right.
A senior crew review determined that he did not do so. Gattis was brought back to the batter's box. Two shots later, he became Paxton's first victim, swaying on a cutter that froze.
Seventy-three of his 82 courts were either a four-seater fastball that climbed 96 mph or a devastating curve. 19659004] After Gattis' prodigious false ball, Paxton withdrew 19 of the next 20 Astros that he met. If it is not for a bad jump on the fourth round helicopter of Gattis that eluded Jean Segura at the stop-court, no runner would have reached.
