Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light contenders Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier competed a second time last night (July 28, 2018) at the UFC on FOX 30 at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Alvarez and Poirier are a most entertaining men's couple in the best division of the sport, and their 2017 match was all-action before the disappointing end. Given their excellent performance against Justin Gaethje and high rankings relative to the rest of the division, a rematch apparently with important title implications – even with the Irish elephant in the room – was an absolute must.
It was weird, but
Unlike the first fight, Alvarez opened up aggressively and attacked the inside of the leading leg. Pear tree circled and responded with kicks on his own, but Alvarez responded with a pair of hard body shots. Between his kicks and his feints, Alvarez found a first distance success
In the second half of the round, Poirier began to find more success with his forehands, and his downside hit landed well. The two men were sneaking in, but Alvarez's strategy of attacking his opponent's leg and body helped him to get a better percentage.
Do not get me wrong, Alvarez won the round, but Poirier certainly won. ] Alvarez scored first to start the second, feigning his usual dart to turn in a fist back. However, he was in trouble a few moments later, while Poirier jumped on a deep guillotine. Alvarez had to use all his veteran tricks to escape – including a catch of closing – but he did so without giving up the first position. Despite everything, Poirier managed to get up quickly enough on the fence
Then, Poirier immediately jumped on a second guillotine, abandoning this time the first position along the fence. This time, Poirier was unable to pull up immediately, as Alvarez advanced into the back mount and mount. Absurdly, an illegal nudge of 12-6 on the shoulder shot a stand up, and Poirier immediately went on the offensive. He checked a weak kick and knocked out Alvarez with a left hand, and Alvarez stepped back under a shower of punches.

Controversy or not, Poirier is your winner after two fights weirdly rejected.
To his credit, Poirier is an intelligent man. He looked cunningly fast in the cage, pulling hard jabs and crosses to mark the face of the Philadelphia native. In addition, he may have won the stand in questionable mode, but he took advantage immediately. Showing what he had learned from Gaethje's fight, Poirier replied with his left hand at the low blow. Once his enemy was stunned, Poirier showed how he scored so many knockout victories with a truly impressive finishing instinct.
Poirier deserves the title, even if it will not happen.
As for Alvarez, he makes great adjustments. The low shots inside were great, his shrinkage fades and takedown game worked great, and this dart backfist was all right. Everything was going perfectly for Alvarez – and it can go against a badass like pear tree at least – until he throws that stupid 12-6 kink. Alvarez was forced to get up, and everything collapsed shortly thereafter.
Such a terrible and stupid mistake.
