The new study began with the development of a mouse model where mtDNA can be depleted using a common antibiotic trigger. At the age of eight weeks, the mice received antibiotic triggering, which resulted in subsequent depletion of the mtDNA. In the space of four weeks, the mice exhibited hair loss, wrinkled skin and lethargy, all signs of natural aging, albeit in an accelerated manner.
