House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said this week that she was not worried about the contents of a laptop that was allegedly stolen from her office when rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
“I’m not concerned about this particular laptop,” Pelosi told MSNBC reporter Joy Reid in an interview that aired Tuesday. “But that doesn’t matter. It can be any laptop and at any time … a voter writes to a congressman, it’s confidential … and for them to take this is a violation not only of my office, but of my connection to my constituents. “
A woman from Pennsylvania, Riley June Williams, 22, has been arrested for allegedly taking the speaker’s laptop, which she allegedly planned to sell to Russian intelligence services.
Pelosi said the laptop was primarily used for Zoom meetings, but she was not sure “what other information might be on it.”

In an arrest warrant filed Sunday, investigators described how an anonymous tipster – a “former romantic partner” of Williams identified as W1 – called the FBI tipline to say they had seen Williams in footage from a ITV News video from January 6. Headquarters of the Capitol.
“W1 said WILLIAMS intended to send the computing device to a friend in Russia, who then considered selling the device to SVR, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service,” further court documents indicate. “According to W1, the transfer from the computer to Russia failed for unknown reasons.”
According to the warrant, Williams “still has the computer device or destroyed it. This matter is still under investigation.”
Pelosi’s assistant Drew Hammill confirmed on Jan. 8 that the laptop was stolen from a conference room, but said it was “only used for presentations.”

“But that person doesn’t know [what’s on the laptop] and they would jeopardize all kinds of information, ”Pelosi told Reid.

Williams faces charges of knowingly entering or remaining in a building or restricted land without legal permission and violent entry and disorderly conduct on the grounds of the Capitol, according to the Department of Justice. It is not yet known whether she will also be charged with theft.
