It has been more than three and a half years since Naoki Yoshida wrote a "letter from the producer", but this one had the opportunity to come back on some subjects to be treated. Final Fantasy XIV: The Shadowbringers' new races and more.
On the blog, Yoshi-P begins by explaining why a new class of healers will not be added to the list. Shadows mists then explains why the two new breeds, Viera and Hrothgar, are not gender-related, unlike other breeds, and finally, why we can not create younger playable characters for ethical reasons.

Why a new healer has not been added with Shadows mists
Before the Tokyo Fan Festival, many of you had planned that we would announce the addition of a new healer position. I suspect it was encouraged by the fact that we had just unveiled a new gunbreaker job.
When we started as a dancer as a DPS post remotely, many welcomed the news, but others wondered why no new healer had been added.
After an internal discussion on how to balance the game as a whole, we decided not to add a new healer with this extension. This decision was influenced by three key factors.
-
- Only two new jobs could be added with Shadowbringers – The release of a new expansion invariably accompanies an increase in the ceiling, which means that in addition to creating new jobs, we must add new actions for existing jobs as well as reviewing and rebalancing the current actions. With the exception of the blue mage's limited work, there are fifteen jobs – seventeen with the addition of a rifle breaker and a dancer. While the development team and I decided to give priority to the addition of new work, we concluded, after reviewing our release schedule for updates, that two new work was our limit. As a result, we had to choose certain roles rather than others.
- Only two physical remote DPS jobs are currently implemented. – Since Stormblood, there are three tanks, three healers, four melee DPS, three ranged magical DPSs, and two remote physical DPS jobs. We believe that it is useful to add another remote physical protection system to enhance the balance of available roles. So we decided to use one of our two new positions to meet this need.
- The current balance between tank and healers – Since we currently have four melee DPS jobs, we decided not to develop another and instead added a new tank.
Tanks in FFXIV are often used as a main or off-tank tank. However, we currently have an odd number of tank jobs, and we thought that it would be easier to balance them in the future if we had an even number of tanks, c & # 39; that's why we finally opted for a gunfire.
Moreover, since we added an astrologer to Heavensward, we had a lot of trouble balancing it with a white wizard and a scholar. Rather than aggravate a complex situation by adding a fourth healer, we have instead decided to give priority to balancing the three existing healer positions for the moment.
That said, we understand that there is a strong desire to find an additional healer and we will consider this when designing new jobs in the future.
Regarding the sex of Viera and Hrothgar
As you know, in Shadowbringers we will introduce two new playable races: the Viera and the Hrothgar. Hrothgar will be male-only and Viera-only women-a decision that has elicited various comments from each region. I would like to explain why we decided to proceed this way.
-
- The cost of developing a new playable race – In an opening speech of the Fan Festival, I stated that it would probably be the last time we added new playable races to FFXIV. Simply put, it takes a lot of time and resources to develop one. I'm sure you all understand that a new breed requires new faces, hairstyles, bodies and other assets. On top of that, they must be able to outfit all existing items, which on its own requires a massive commitment of resources. With each breed having a unique type and chassis, each visible piece of equipment must be carefully adjusted to display correctly on the Hrothgar and Viera models. A cursory search will show that FFXIV has about ten thousand items that can be equipped, all of which must be manually modified by our designers. This is an immediate and unavoidable development cost when adding a new breed.
The addition of new playable races will have a greater impact than the development cost of the elements added in version 5.1 and subsequent updates. Not only will we go from twelve variants (six races, two sexes) to fourteen, but we will also have to devote more resources to creating new emoticons. While FFXIV We will continue to strive to maintain a regular cycle of major updates of 3.5 months. We must also ensure that there is sufficient time for the meticulous development of new content – otherwise quality will inevitably fall. This is a complex problem that can not be solved simply by injecting more money or money because it has an impact on debugging and quality assurance.
In summary, it was the circumstances that informed my earlier statement that it will probably be the last time we add new playable races. for the moment, it is difficult to see us maintain our patch update schedule if we have to count more than seven races and two genders (technically six races with two genders and two races with one gender, but that's the functional equivalent). - A significant number of players have asked to play Viera – As it may be the last time we added new races, we thought long and hard about which breed would be the best. Fans around the world have expressed an overwhelming desire for the FFXII Viera, and we have been aware of this for a long time. In fact, we considered adding Viera to Heavensward, but finally decided that since it was FFXIVFirst expansion, we should rather add a brand new breed, the Au Ra race. If we were to add another race to Viera, we expected many fans to be disappointed. So we decided to try to satisfy their request in this extension. The desire to please our fans is the main reason for this decision.
- Provide a more bestial variety for Final Fantasy XIV Character Creation and World Construction – After seeing the positive reception of Lupine characters that we introduced into Stormblood, we concluded that for the long-term health of FFXIVit was important to implement a wider variety of character types beyond the traditionally beautiful in a future expansion. In fact, we had been thinking of adding stupid characters for a long time, and as this may have been our last chance, we decided that we should, just as we did with Viera, expand tradition and choices available. to the players.
Character creation consists of providing options to players. Although the number of people who will use them is not known, we also think it is useful to simply make them exist – to empower people to fill the world with greater variety.
Although these second and third points are in conflict, we nevertheless felt that it was in the interest of our players to try to satisfy both requests. We understood that some players would be unhappy if they could not use their favorite genre, but despite this, after much internal discussion, we decided that this approach was the best way to improve the overall gaming experience.
We could have decided to implement only Viera men and women, or only Hrothgar men and women. However, we have instead opted for an approach to expand opportunities in multiple ways.
By playing with Shadowbringers, you will learn that Viera and Hrothgar exist. Even if you do not meet anyone in person, if we developers find ways to solve the various problems that prevent us from implementing them, you may be able to see them for yourself one day. I want to make it clear that this does not mean that it will eventually happen and that I can not make any promises at the moment. I hope you will understand and bear with us.
Addendum – Addition of Younger Playable Characters
Among the comments received, we received requests for playable characters resembling young boys and girls. Unfortunately, this request can not be taken into account for ethical reasons.
Every year, the debate around moral and ethical issues in games intensifies, and we do not want to present children in combat or in pain – and it is strictly forbidden to make such characters sexually and to take catches of screen, etc.
In any event, regardless of what our players had or did not intend to do, it remains that if a review committee evaluated this content and deemed it unacceptable, we would be obliged to suspend the service of FFXIV . We ask you to keep these factors in mind as we strive to meet the changing standards of the time.
In closing (and with a bonus!)
The development team is working hard to refine what we hope will be our biggest expansion to date. Slowly but surely, we are preparing for the day when you can all play the role of Viera and Hrothgar. There are only two months left before these new adventures and many others, but in the meantime, hold on!
But before leaving, I thought I'd leave you with a taste of what I personally consider to be the strongest of Hrothgar and Viera (and no, it's not an invitation to debate).

Ah yes. As you may remember from the Tokyo Fan Festival speech, I mentioned that because of the particular design of the Hrothgar and Viera heads, the fitted headpieces would not be visible.
The glasses, etc., would not show up either at first, but after finding out how many people were calling us to do something, no matter what, after the announcement, the l? The character's team decided to take advantage of his free moments to make it possible … without telling me. Our designers have carefully edited more than five hundred and forty items of this type so that they display correctly with our new face models. /greet
Every day, the FFXIV The development team is trying to make it impossible. Together, we took another step forward and overcame another obstacle that we once thought impossible. We hope you will continue to support us as you live everyone FFXIV has to offer.
