Naomi OsakaThe first press conference since his controversy at Roland Garros did not go well… the tennis superstar broke down in tears and needed a break after a member of the media asked him a “tone question” aggressive”.
Osaka – who withdrew from the French Open in May after being fined for skipping post-match media sessions – answered several questions on Monday ahead of her appearance at the Open Western & Southern in Ohio, before it all went off the rails.
According to a tennis reporter Ben rothenberg, a member of the media asked Osaka “a pretty aggressive question about how she enjoys a high media profile but doesn’t like talking to the media.”
It was then that Osaka started to cry.
She wiped her tears with the sleeve of her jacket, pulled her hat down to her face… and finally had to walk away from the podium.
Rothenberg reports that Osaka returned to finish the press conference … but added: “the aggressive tone of an unknown person, after Naomi had already spoken in a previous response about how this is what she finds difficult in press conferences, got things completely wrong. “
Osaka agent, Stuart Duguid, the reporter slammed in a statement following the presser… saying, “The Cincinnati Enquirer bully is the epitome of why player / media relations are so strained right now.”
“Everyone on this Zoom will agree that his tone was all wrong and his only purpose was to intimidate. Really appalling behavior.”
Duguid added: “And this insinuation that Naomi owes her success off the pitch to the media is a myth – don’t be so indulgent to yourself.”
As we previously reported, Osaka has stated that she does not want to do media sessions during the French Open due to mental health issues, and later revealed she had struggled with “long bouts of depression” in recent years.
Osaka took a break from major tennis events after the withdrawal, although she eventually returned for this month’s Olympics in Tokyo.
