Reigning champion Naomi Osaka suffered a surprise defeat in the fourth round of the American Open on Monday after losing two straight sets to 13th seed Belinda Bencic, following defeat of defending champion Novak Djokovic.
Bencic of Switzerland defeated Osaka at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, winning 7-5, 7-6. She is now 3-0 against Osaka this season and has nine wins in the top 10 in 2019.
DJOKOVIC BOOED BY CROWD AFTER BEING WITHDRAWN IN THE UNITED STATES WITH BAD SHOULDER
Osaka, from Japan, did not appear in top form, wearing a black sleeve on his throbbing left knee. A coach came to visit the 21-year-old after Bencic climbed 3-2 in the second set.
Osaka's result came a day after fellow defending champion Djokovic left his fourth-round match against Stan Wawrinka due to left shoulder pain. Both were the first seed of the tournament.
Osaka made her breakthrough at Flushing Meadows a year ago by winning her first major title by beating Serena Williams in a chaotic final that was transferred after Williams had a long talk with the chair umpire.
