Then the tennis superstar spoke to the media again after avoiding press conferences and ultimately pulled out of Roland Garros in May to preserve her sanity. Outbursts of anxiety had prompted her to rethink by submitting to in-depth questions about her performance. She hadn’t raced since the Paris Grand Slam – and hadn’t faced post-match press interviews.

“More than anything else, I just focus on tennis,” Osaka told reporters on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. “The Olympics have been a dream of mine since I was a kid, so I felt like the break I took was really needed. I really feel a little refreshed and am happy again.

Osaka, representing Japan, said she was “happy” for reporters to ask questions.

“I feel a little out of my body right now,” she said. “There is nothing wrong with my body, I just felt very nervous,” Osaka said. “I haven’t played from France so there are definitely things I did a little bit wrong, but I think I can improve in the games I keep playing.”

Osaka, who lit the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony, will then play against Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic, 50th.
