Naomi Osaka hit back at Megyn Kelly after the former NBC News anchor slammed the tennis star for appearing on magazine covers after refusing to speak to the media at Roland Garros.
Osaka made international headlines in May when she announced she would not be attending post-match press conferences during the tournament, later leaving Roland Garros and retiring from Wimbledon. She said in social media posts at the time that she prioritized her mental health instead.
In tweets on Monday, Kelly and conservative commentator Clay Travis appeared to accuse Osaka of not being sincere about his struggles after appearing on the cover of several magazines earlier this month.
“Since saying she was too introverted to talk to the media after tennis matches, Naomi Osaka started a reality show, A Barbie, and is now on the cover of the SI swimsuit issue,” he said. tweeted Travis.
Kelly joined in, adding, “Let’s not forget the cover of (and interview in) Vogue Japan and Time Mag!”
In response, Osaka said in a now deleted tweet: “Being a journalist I would have assumed you would take the time to research what the deadlines are for magazines, if you had you would. discovered. I turned all of my covers last year.
“Instead, your first reaction is to come up here and spit out some negativity, do better Megan.”
The 23-year-old tennis champion appeared to block Kelly after that.
Osaka “blocked me by shooting me”, Kelly tweeted. “She apparently claims that she turned her many b / 4 covers, publicly claiming that she was too socially anxious to deal with the press. The truth is she just doesn’t like Qs that she can’t. not control. Admit it. “
Kelly joined NBC News from Fox News in 2017, but her time was cut short after asking why it was considered racist for whites to wear blackface on Halloween during a segment of the “Megyn Kelly TODAY” show. She then apologized for her comments and left the company with the remainder of her $ 69 million contract.
