Minnesota’s taste of spring in the last few days will be shattered by a quick burst of snow on Saturday night and Sunday morning, and the totals could be quite impressive where a narrow band of heavy precipitation sets in.
According to the National Weather Service, there could be a narrow corridor that ends in 5 to 7 inches of snow. This is where a winter storm watch has been issued for southwestern Minnesota, while a winter weather advisory is in place further east and north, including the Twin Cities, where 2 to 4 inches of snow could accumulate.
“It is difficult to predict the exact location due to the small area affected and uncertainties in the configuration,” says the NWS.
Blue is a winter storm watch; purple is a winter weather advisory.

“A band of snow will develop from southwestern Minnesota to northwestern Wisconsin as a surface depression deepens in Iowa. Snow totals generally appear to be in the range of 2 to 4 inches, the quantities rapidly decreasing on either side of the strip, “NWS explains.

The weather service notes that locally higher quantities are possible in areas that are expected to reach 2 to 4 inches. This map could change with a slight shift in the storm’s path.

Here’s the 8 a.m. radar simulation from the NAM computer model, which shows snow starting in southwest Minnesota on Saturday night and reaching the Twin Cities at midnight. The snow could be over around noon on Sunday.
The second half of next week appears to see much warmer temperatures as March rolls out like a lamb, with temperatures for the first half of the month above normal, possibly reaching 50 degrees next week.
