NASA rover finds ancient stone arch on Martian surface

Arch Nemesis

NASA’s Curiosity rover has found something on the surface of Mars that in scientific parlance can only be described as “absolutely brilliant”: a small, naturally-shaped stone arch in Gale Crater.

You can spot the ark in the official NASA photo repository, such as CNET reports, but NASA-JPL engineer Kevin M. Gill has stitched the images together for a better look at the bizarre formation.

“I’m leaving it up to scientists to explain what’s going on here,” he joked.

Rock on

Is there a chance that the ark is proof of an ancient Martian civilization?

Almost certainly not. The landscape on Earth is dotted with arcs that formed naturally, so there’s no reason to think Mars would be any different.

Any alien architect behind NASA’s latest discovery would also have to be quite small; like CNET Points out, the entire field of view is only about half a foot, which means the arc is quite small.
