NASA spots "Star Trek" sign on Mars

The Martian desert is rich in curiosities.

And Star Trek symbolism too. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter – a satellite zipping around the red planet – captured a mass of ancient lava rock that strangely resembles the Star Trek Starfleet badge coated with galactic explorers of the show.

"Enterprising viewers will discover that these features look like a famous logo: you're right, but it's only a coincidence," NASA scientists said.

NASA's planetary researchers, as they always do, had a realistic explanation of the geological function, calling it "the complex history of dunes, lava and wind."

This Martian land once housed large sand dunes, sliding slowly on the ground as on Earth. A geologically exciting day "there was an eruption," NASA explained, and lava poured around the sand dunes. The sand has long since disappeared, but there remains an impression left by the cooled lava.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, on the series, used the observation to challenge the Star wars franchise, tweeting that "we beat you!"

But Mark Hamill was not too impressed by Martian observation.

"It looks like a boomerang for me", the Star wars icon responded.
