NASA's striking rainbow map shows the movement of the earth after two major earthquakes in California – History

– NASA has unveiled a remarkable rainbow map showing how much the Earth had moved a lot after the recent major earthquakes in southern California.

On July 4, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit the city of Ridgecrest, California, about 150 km northeast of Los Angeles. The earthquake was then called "forsock" on July 5, in the same region, by an earthquake of greater magnitude 7.1, according to the US Geological Survey.

The NASA map, created by NASA's and the California Institute of Technology's Advanced Rapid Jet Analysis and Imaging team, shows the surface displacement caused by the two shakers .

It was created from radar images taken before the earthquakes of April 16, 2018 and after July 8, and scientists compared the changes between the two. The team used images from the Japanese satellite ALOS-2.

Each rainbow cycle represents 4.8 inches of ground displacement to or from the satellite, NASA said.

"The linear features through which the color fringes break indicate the likely locations of a surface fracture caused by earthquakes," NASA said in a press release. "Noisy areas may indicate places where the earth's surface has been disturbed by earthquakes."

Another map created by the team following the earthquakes shows how far Earth has moved and in what direction – but in a different way. National and federal scientists, including the California Geological Survey and the USGS, were using maps like these in the field to assess damage and map the flaws that broke, NASA said.

The satellite images published by Planet Labs Inc. also appeared to indicate changes in the area near the 7.1 epicenter of the earthquake. In the photos taken before and after July 4th and 6th, a crack on the surface of the earth was visible.
