The 61-year-old stock driver champion took off from the single-engine Aerolite 103 aircraft from Riconn Airport in Rhode Island and attempted to return to the airfield. when the plane crashed near the border, the Connecticut state police said.

NASCAR confirmed that Stefanik had died in the accident.

"Mike Stefanik was one of the most successful drivers in the history of NASCAR, but he was even more representative of our sport," said Jim France, president and CEO of NASCAR, in a statement. "His tough, competitive nature and his excellence on the racetrack have earned him the admiration of fans and competitors."

Stefanik holds the record for the Whelen Modified Tour with 74 wins between 1985 and 2014. He had won nine NASCAR Series championships, which tied him with Hall of Fame member Richie Evans.
