A Nashville, Tennessee police officer was shot dead Tuesday night in an ambush-style attack while responding to a house where a gunman lured police before opening fire and killing himself, said the police.
Officer Brian Sherman was shot in the upper left arm as he and other officers responded to a “visit call” as a woman was shot dead at a house in the 7000 block of Sugarloaf Drive just after 6:10 p.m. . brother shot his mother and shot inside, police spokesman Don Aaron said.
When officers arrived at the house and knocked on the door, they were greeted with gunfire, Aaron said.
“Almost immediately gunshots were fired at the officers,” he said.
They backed up and Sherman received first aid from his colleagues. The shooter – identified as Salman Mohamed, 22 – came out of the house with a rifle and shot himself in the head as officers tried to negotiate with him, police said. No officer opened fire at any time, police said.
Sherman, who has worked in the department for two years, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He should survive.
Investigators believe Mohamed called 911 to lure authorities into the area. The caller told the 911 dispatcher he was scared and begged the police to hurry to the house, Aaron said.
“It was a trick to get the police to the house,” he said.
Mohamed’s mother and his three siblings were found safe and sound inside the house. They will be questioned by investigators.

Investigators have not determined the motive for the shooting. The officers who responded were not equipped with body cameras, Aaron said.
