Whether you own, rent, or just live in a house, you need to get to know Nate Berkus. Who are we kidding? Of course you already know him from his many, many appearance on Oprah, which in turn led to her own daytime chat show. Superstar interior designer and leader at Nate Berkus Associates also has his name on a host of lifestyle and household items and is a prolific author.

Long story short: whether it’s about making your home prettier, smarter, or more comfortable, Berkus is the man with the plan. And now he’s there to help us when we need him most.

With the pandemic leaving us all in need of something – whatever it is – to spruce up our homes (and moods), Berkus has been kind enough to share some of his secrets to a quality quarantine life.

Step one: create a calming environment. Even the very walls of your living space can subconsciously add to your stress levels, and who needs it?

“Here’s the thing,” says Berkus, “We’re all looking at our homes right now and thinking, how can we make it more relaxing?” The answer? “Neutral paint colors like alabaster, cream, pale grays, ivories, they help put out the noise outside.”

Berkus suggests Behr River Rock Gray Interior Latex for a distinguished look for your hallway, bedroom or office. Its semi-gloss finish adds light reflection for spaces that the sun does not reach and makes them very easy to clean.

Full disclosure. The Careyes candle (car-AY-ess) is the creation of fellow interior designer and husband of Berkus, Jeremy Brent. We warmly endorse this stylish accessory for its aromatic touch of vanilla, cinnamon bark, sweet tangerine and dried thyme brings a delicious woodland walk vibe (also vegan, paraben free, and cruelty free) to any living space. .

“It smells absolutely delicious,” says Berkus. “It calms me down.”

For many people, the positive side of the pandemic has been rediscovering the joys of reading. Of course, you! Now is the time to step up your game with the light from the Bright Light mini-book. This is what Berkus did:

“It saved my life during the pandemic. I use it every night to read in bed. “And why not? Its 2-10 lumen range means you can adjust its brightness to your personal specifications. It lasts up to 60 hours on one charge (that’s right, no in-store operation for batteries; it just plug in its USB cord for an hour and you’re good to go).

Oh, and its focused beam will be a boom for your early riser partner, or as Berkus puts it, “It lights up your page and doesn’t drive someone else in bed with you crazy.” Available in blue, green, lavender, purple, white and black.

“There is a huge trend in functional drinks,” says Berkus, and he opted for Enhanced Water Beverage from Driftwell, the thirst quencher. It contains magnesium, a subtle flavor of blackberry and lavender and L’Theanine promoting chlaxing.

What doesn’t he have? Sugar, calories or carbonation. How’s that for a refreshing change? “We’ve all been very stressed out lately,” says Berkus. “so that’s part of my relaxation ritual.”

“Anything that comes in a glass can, don’t throw it away,” says Berkus. Good advice, especially if you have a piece as pleasing to the eye and classically functional as Anchor Hocking’s vintage half-liter. carafe.

Use it to let your reds breathe before dinner or to make your whites more expensive than they really are. Or do like Berkus and try it with this other life elixir: “Recycle it and use it as fresh water on your nightstand. I’m looking for it, like, five times a night.”
