National Guard soldiers defending the U.S. Capitol fell ill after being fed almost completely raw meat – with shaved metal also found in filthy meals, whistleblowers say.
An unnamed Michigan National Guard staff sergeant told WXYZ the force had repeatedly complained after more than a dozen soldiers were sickened by the undercooked meat.
“Yesterday, for example, there were 74 different meals found with raw beef,” the sergeant told the station on Monday, sharing images of meat that looked completely raw in the middle.
“Just yesterday… soldiers found metal shavings in their food,” he said.
Undercooked meals that are “good to start” were then made “even more dangerous” by a delay of up to four hours before being served, he said.
Despite their key role in defending the Capitol against feared national terrorist plots, the troops were also woefully undernourished, complained the Staff Sgt.
A typical breakfast was “maybe a Danish and some kind of juice,” while sometimes it was “clearly a bun and SunnyD,” the sergeant said.
Another soldier complained last month that “several soldiers were getting sick and vomiting after eating,” The Detroit News noted.
“Morale is very bad; many have served abroad and cannot believe the quality of the food they are receiving here, ”complained the soldier.
Michigan National Guard – which still has nearly 1,000 troops on Capitol Hill – issued a statement Monday, calling the reports “very worrying” and “unacceptable”, and stating that it was the contractor concerned.
“The health and well-being of our Michigan National Guard service members are critical to their success as they continue to serve in missions in the United States and around the world,” the statement said.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office told local media she addressed the issue last month and was assured it has been resolved.
The 14 members of the Michigan House delegation signed a letter on Tuesday asking the National Guard to cancel the food service contract and find another supplier.
“It is completely unacceptable that our men and women who serve in Washington, DC, are hospitalized because of the food provided to them,” the lawmakers wrote.
Michigan troops make up about 20% of the 5,200 Guardsmen and Airmen who support civilian law enforcement on Capitol Hill, The Detroit News noted, with its deployment scheduled to end on March 12.
