Hurricane Dorian headed for the United States and was on the verge of becoming a major hurricane on Friday before landing Monday on the east coast of Florida, forecasters said.

The storm slowly turned west on Friday as it headed for the mainland and is expected to strengthen in the coming days, the National Hurricane Center announced. Dorian should then cross the southeastern United States as a possible Category 4 storm.
Forecasters say that Dorian will likely slow down considerably as Florida approaches, allowing for heavy rains, dangerous winds and a potentially life-threatening storm surge.
