Dave Martinez will not run the Nationals in St. Louis on Monday because he stayed in Washington to undergo a procedure in the heart.
Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told the media that Martinez had had chest pains during the team's home game against Atlanta on Sunday. The manager left for the sixth round and was taken to a hospital.
Martinez, 54, has undergone cardiac catheterization and will remain in the hospital for tests. Rizzo said that Martinez was "optimistic" but that there was no timetable for his return.
The bench coach, Chip Hale, will lead the team on Monday. He replaced Martinez Sunday.
The Nationals currently have first place in the wild, with 1.5 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs. This is a key series of three games against the Cardinals, leaders in the center of the NL.
Martinez is in his second season at the head of the Nationals. After winning 82 games last season, the Nats tied that total this season with 14 games to play.
Martinez had a 16-year career at MLB with nine teams.
