WASHINGTON – A sunny Monday has slipped due to a recurring problem: Nationals have a problem with the Mets.
No other team has confused Washington more this season than the Mets. At the end of May, the New York sweep pushed the Nationals season to the limit. He wavered there before the start of a prolonged recovery against Miami. The best baseball team has come out of the carnage over the next three months.
Washington has managed skills and flaws throughout the months of June, July and August. However, he stumbled against the Mets during a series of feverish weekends in early August in Citi Field, the one that pushed Nationals players to complain about envy on the environment. Washington played 19-7 in August, eliminating the teams and sweeping his opponents. He lost only two sets. One to the Diamondbacks, one to the Mets.
In fact, the Nationals have a losing record against six teams this season: Arizona (3-4), Los Angeles (3-4), Milwaukee (2-4), San Diego (3-4), St. Louis (1). -3) and the Mets (6-11). Combine these recordings. Washington has seven games under .500 against the five non-New York teams and five games under .500 against the Mets alone with two to play this season.

How did this influence the post-season image? Powerfully. If the Nationals were only 9-8 against the Mets, they would be 80-56 in total, just two games behind Atlanta in the defeats column (3 ½ total) with a four-game series starting Thursday. Instead, six and a half games back, winning five of seven goals against Atlanta over the next two weeks appears as a minimum for the division to remain on the line.
Monday's 7-3 baton was centered on Joe Ross. Seven points earned in three and a half games boosted fifth place and increased his ERA to 6.17. The Nationals did a curious thing when the alignments were expanded on Sunday. Austin Voth and Jeremy Hellickson were added – the latter occupying a top spot for 40 people who could have been eliminated. The reason? Protection for future issues, even with Erick Fedde on the list. If a power failure distorts the schedule, Fedde, Hellickson or Voth could start unexpectedly. One of the three could also make his debut in the two-tournament late in the season against Philadelphia.
"We'll see what happens, but Joe shot the ball very well," said Martinez. "He had a bad exit here. He pitched in Chicago, I know his shin bothered him a bit, but he kept us in the game. He throws the ball well, he really is. We will have to see. Follow his routine this week and see where he is. "
All have their problems. Ross seemed to have recovered with an EER of 1.05 in August. His running total remained high, but he fought it with a lead at 95 mph. He has turned around since he was shot in the shin on August 19th. Ross allowed two earned runs in four and a half innings on his next start and was out of the rotation this weekend. Monday's disorder followed.
The Fedde FIP (pitch independent of the establishment of the field) was launched Monday at 5:47. Like Ross, he's doing too much. Fedde beat back-to-back batters on four courts each in his two-goal heats on Monday. Both work to be just the average of the league.
Hellickson played for the last time in the majors on May 19th. He was placed on the injured list on May 21 due to an injury to the right shoulder. It's a coincidence, it happened in New York and produced one of the strangest visuals of the season. The day Hellickson was placed on the casualty list, he played a long time in the field outside Citi Field. He has a 6.23 ERA.
Voth, 2 ⅓ innings, two hits, no points, four strikeouts on Monday, could leave a window open on the rotation. Before his right bicep tendinitis put him on the wounded list on July 21, Voth caught Martinez's eye by throwing 95 mph. Nor does he share Ross's and Fedde's command problems. Monday's launches take turns for the next start of the No. 5 launcher, which would be Saturday in Atlanta.
Washington will have to solve both problems in the next two days. New York is in town for two more games. All throwing options will attempt to recover before someone takes the mound against Atlanta first. Solving the problems, or both, would give a boost to the National Playoff Team's prosecution.
