Fewer and fewer fan bases have a horse in the NBA playoff race. But in the draft NBA, each team has a horse and the big day for the lottery teams has arrived. The NBA Draft Tuesday night draw is underway.
With the sensation of Duke, Zion Williamson should be the first choice overall, the stakes are high this year. Each team would be delighted to be able to conquer the great man, who is one of the best hopes of the last years.
The draw – held annually since 1985 – determines the order in which teams that did not participate in the playoffs will select this year's NBA draw. Has the format changed this year?
Yes. In order to dissuade the teams from doing the tanking, the league set up a new set of lottery probabilities. Previously, the team with the worst record had a 25% chance of getting the first choice. Now, the teams with the three worst records all have an equal chance of 14% in the first choice. Similarly, chances were smoothed all over the table, giving teams in the middle of the lottery a better chance of climbing into the top four places.
In addition, the team with the worst record was guaranteed to receive no worse than the fourth choice. This was because the first three choices were the only ones determined by the lottery. After these choices, the remaining teams were ranked in the reverse order of their regular season records. Now, the first four choices will be determined by random draw. So, the team with the worst record will not get worse than the fifth choice.
When did the lottery begin?
The lottery was approved in 1984 and entered into force for the first time in the 1985 NBA project. The New York Knicks – who finished with the worst album of the season – won the lottery that year and chose Patrick Ewing. This is not without controversy, as many still believe that this year's lottery was set by the league.
Who are the best prospects?
There is no doubt that the best prospect for participating in the repechage is striker Duke Zion Williamson. At age 18, he was a viral sensation in high school and became the best college basketball player in his first year. Whichever team wins the No. 1 pick, he should be the first player selected.
