The Warriors have an opportunity to add a great young player with the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft quickly approaching. However, their chances are probably even better in a year.
While the 2020 draft class is widely regarded as one of the worst the league has seen in several years, it’s the exact opposite of 2021. There are a handful of 2021 prospects that draft evaluators consider a lot. more promising than any of these. which will be chosen on November 18.
Fortunately for the Warriors, they are in a formidable position to capitalize on this new wave of talent. In addition to owning their own 2021 first-round pick, they also acquired the 2021 protected first round of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ top three as part of the Andrew Wiggins-D’Angelo Russell trade.
If the Timberwolves’ pick arrives outside of the first three caps of the 2021 Draft, it will pass to Golden State. If by any chance Minnesota’s pick ranks in the top three, then the Warriors will receive the Timberwolves’ unprotected first round in 2022.
The 2022 project also has a chance to be great, but that’s obviously even later. Plenty of teams have already started licking their chops for the Class of 2021, and apparently that includes the Warriors.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe reported on Monday that the Warriors place a higher value on Minnesota’s 2021 first-round pick than theirs in 2020.
“You talk to people who have engaged with the Warriors at any level,” Lowe said Tuesday on the “The Lowe Post” podcast, “… The Warriors seem to these teams to appreciate that Minnesota picks more. Choice n ° 2 in this project. “
It really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Between Cade Cunningham, Jalen Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Evan Mobley, Ziaire Williams, BJ Boston, Jalen Johnson and others, there are quite a few 2021 prospects that would have had a good chance of being the top pick in nine days. Therefore, ESPN NBA Draft Analyst Mike Schmitz believes teams should be wary of including the 2021 picks in draft day trades on November 18.
“I think Cade Cunningham would potentially be No. 1 in this draft,” Schmitz told Lowe. “I think Jalen Green would have a chance to do that, Ziaire Williams … these guys are full and complete cleats. And then as you go down the line the roughs in front of us will all be better than this one., we’re thinking at this point. So, yeah, I’d hang on to those 2021 picks, that’s for sure. “

The Warriors have made it clear that they intend to compete for the championship this coming season, and many have speculated that this will prompt them to trade in draft picks for another star. It’s certainly possible that things will turn out that way, but the 2021 draft class should at least give Golden State a break.
If the Warriors do end up trading Minnesota’s first-round pick for 2021, they better make sure it’s worth it.
