Brooklyn Nets are considered one of the leaders, if not the leader of the clubhouse, to sign free agent Kyrie Irving this summer. If this happens, it is "very unlikely" that the team retains its own free agent, Dr. Angelo Russell, according to a SNY report.

By the end of the week, teams interested in pursuing Kyrie Irving still felt the Nets were favorites, sources said. But no team interested in Irving, including the Knicks and Lakers, had been led to believe they would no longer be able to sign it, according to these sources.
If Irving ended up signing in Brooklyn, this could have an interesting coaching effect on alignment, particularly Dr. Angelo Russell.
If Irving signs with the Nets, SNY sources familiar with the record say that it is highly unlikely that Russell will stay with the Nets. Members of the Nets organization have communicated this idea in recent days, sources said.
At the moment, the Nets have a maximum salary space available, but they have the option to create a second one if they cut ties with Russell, which would be a strange adjustment anyway with Irving, the two guards being dominant. All this assuming the Nets get Irving, of course. This is not safe.
The idea of crossing the underlying currents of the league for some time has been to pair Irving with Kevin Durant. At first, the Knicks were supposed to be their favorite destination. Now, Irving has been more tied to the Nets. But Achilles ripped through Durant puts a big stranger on how all this is played out. Maybe Kyrie is thinking about being a long star and starting to think about the Lakers, who already have LeBron James and may be about to negotiate for Anthony Davis.
If Kyrie does not come to Brooklyn, Russell could still sign again.
Russell has had a career year this season and made his first appearance in a team of stars. If the Nets let him walk, many teams will be interested in his services. Begley reports that the Indiana Pacers are part of these teams. Others include the Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns, and perhaps the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks, both of whom can access the cap that is probably needed to sign Russell.
