NBA player Jaxson Hayes was forcibly shot by officers who used stun guns on him early Wednesday in Los Angeles before being arrested and charged with resisting arrest, police said Thursday.
The confrontation with Hayes, 21, a center for the New Orleans pelicans, became physical after he challenged officers’ orders to stay outside a residence where officers were investigating a call regarding a family dispute shortly before 3 a.m., Los Angeles police said in a statement. . Hayes attempted to enter the residence as police blocked his path, police said.
It was at this point that officers attempted to place Hayes’ hands behind her back, police said. But he broke free and pushed one of the officers against a wall, they said.
Hayes’ agent could not be immediately reached for comment on Thursday.
The altercation was recorded by body cameras, police said.
“The officers used physical force to bring Hayes to the ground in order to overcome his resistance. Once on the ground, Hayes attempted to stand up and continued to resist the officers,” police said. “Officers used two deployments of the Taser, as well as body weight and physical force during the altercation, which lasted about two and a half minutes, before officers could handcuff Hayes.”
Police say they first made contact with Hayes in the front yard of a residence. They then determined he was an NBA player.
The incident is under investigation, police said.

Larry Hanna, a police union lawyer who represents Officer Hayes is accused of pushing against the wall, said the officer was “seriously injured”.
“He was violently pushed against a wall and blood from the officer’s head remained on the wall upon impact,” Hanna said. “Young people admire NBA players, and this type of behavior should not be tolerated.”
A woman at the scene of Hayes’ arrest “refused to cooperate with the police investigation into the initial appeal of the marital dispute,” police said.
A reservation report from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department indicated that Hayes had been charged with a felony. He posted a $ 25,000 bond on Wednesday afternoon, according to the report. A hearing date was scheduled for Jan. 24, according to the records.
Hayes, the No.8 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, averaged 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Pelicans last season.
