NBA rumors: Andre Iguodala will be free agent as team option declined

Longtime warrior Andre Iguodala will return to the free agent market this summer, as the Miami Heat declined the veteran’s squad option for 2021-22, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Sunday morning citing sources.

Iguodala has spent the last two seasons in Miami after six years decorated with the Warriors, including winning the NBA Finals MVP in 2015.

Even at the age of 37, Iguodala is expected to generate a lot of interest among competitors when free agency opens on Monday afternoon.

The Warriors added a wing with their seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft at Jonathan Kuminga, but Iguodala would be a perfect fit for the second unit if he ended up returning to the Bay Area.

Without much headroom, the Warriors would either have to tap into the mid-level exception to sign Iguodala or convince him to accept a veteran’s minimum contract to return.

Iguodala’s close relationship with Steph Curry is well documented, and the forward continues to defend his friend’s place among the NBA’s elite players.

The Warriors won’t be the only ones chasing Iguodala in free agency, but a return to the organization he helped win three championships would be a wonderful and beneficial story for the pursuit of another title.
