What had long been assumed would have now been confirmed.
Athletic’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday night, citing sources, that the Warriors have been granted a disabled player exception (DPE) following Klay Thompson’s Achilles injury.
With the DPE, the Warriors can either sign a free agent for a one-year contract worth up to $ 9.3 million, or trade for a player whose salary is equal to or less than that value and who has one year remaining on his contract. The exception cannot be combined with any other asset and will expire on April 19.
Warriors can use DPE anytime before the expiration date, but for a variety of reasons it can take a while to do so. DPE is a valuable asset the Warriors could dramatically improve their roster with, but given the harsh tax penalties that would result from using it, they will likely wait until a valid opportunity arises to do so – if it ever does.

In addition to the DPE, the Warriors still have about $ 3.5 million in Mid-Level Taxpayer Exception (MLE) that they could sign a player with.
