NBA still exiled from much of China’s vast TV market – The Athletic

While other news has made sports headlines since the standoff began in 2019, the Chinese government continues to quietly keep the NBA largely off the air in the world’s largest basketball market.

The televised exile began in October 2019 when then Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong facing violent crackdown by mainland China’s authoritarian Communist government .

It was an expensive tweet for the NBA. Beijing quickly kicked the league games off the air and off the nation’s main streaming service, a blow to a league that is thirsty for China’s huge audience and its money.
