At the end of last season, there was a big moment in the closing minutes of a clash between the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans when LaMelo and Lonzo Ball went there. With the Hornets two behind in the dying minutes, LaMelo stalked his older brother and pushed the ball out before the two sprinted and dived to try and secure possession.
After LaMelo’s Rookie of the Year campaign and Lonzo’s $ 85 million four-year deal with the Chicago Bulls in free agency, it’s clear this won’t be the last battle between the two brothers. And depending on how things go this summer, there could be more Ball vs Ball games in the future.
The trio’s younger brother, LiAngelo, plays for the Hornets in the Las Vegas Summer League. He made the most of this opportunity on his debut on Sunday, scoring five 3-pointers and finishing with 16 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals in 16 minutes. His five 3s were more than the rest of the team put together (three).
LaVar Ball was sitting on the court with a hat that read “I told you so” and loved LiAngelo’s great performance. LaMelo was also in attendance, seated with Hornets coach James Borrego and teammates Miles Bridges. Performance was one thing, but it had to mean even more to LiAngelo to be able to do it in front of his family.
After going undrafted in 2018, the closest LiAngelo has been to play in the NBA is a training player contract with the Oklahoma City Blue in the G League and a training camp deal with the Detroit Pistons. Neither has proven successful, however, and he still has a long way to go in building a list. If he continues to showcase such performances, however, he could well earn a spot.
