NBA trade deadline: Bulls in talks to acquire Celtics’ Daniel Theis

Bulls in talks to acquire Daniel Theis from the Boston Celtics on trade deadline buzzer KC Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago reported Thursday afternoon.

The acquisition is incorporated into the earlier trading of the Bulls from Daniel Gafford and Chandler Hutchison to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Troy Brown Jr. and Mo Wagner, by Ryan McDonough. Here are the full settings, including Javonte Green coming to Chicago and Luke Kornet heading to Boston:

The Celtics signed the German-born Theis in July 2017, and he has played an important role for them ever since. He started all 17 playoff games last season (center) as the team progressed to the Eastern Conference Finals and started 37 of 42 appearances before the deadline this season, averaging 9.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and a block while shooting 55.2 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from the 3-point range.

Theis is making $ 5 million this season, but is ready for unrestricted free agency this summer. Green, an athletic 6-foot-4 wing on the sidelines of the Celtics’ rotation, will be a restricted free agent this offseason.

For the Bulls, he ended an active day that saw them acquire Nikola Vučević, Troy Brown Jr. and Al-Farouq Aminu. Theis adapts to the type of large ground spacing that Billy Donovan has displayed an affinity for and also brings knowledge on defense. At 6-8, he hovered between center and power forward, which would make him a versatile frontcourt alongside all of the Bulls’ greats.
