NBC apologizes for Selena Gomez kidney transplant joke on ‘Saved by the Bell’ reboot

The joke referring to Gomez’s health issues is made during Peacock’s reboot “Saved by the Bell”, in its sixth episode.

“I know for a fact that Selena Gomez’s kidney donor was Justin Bieber’s mother. My God, I wish I had my phone so I could prove it, ”said one student.

In another scene, graffiti on a wall behind some students read, “Does Selena Gomez even have a kidney?”

The episode sparked backlash on social media, with many Gomez fans coming to his defense.

“We apologize,” NBC said in a statement released Monday to CNN. “We never intended to shed light on Selena’s health. We have been in contact with her team and will be donating to her charity, the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC.”

CNN has reached out to representatives for Gomez for comment.

Gomez revealed in 2017 that she had a transplant after battling lupus for several years. She received the kidney from her best friend, Francia Raisa, who addressed the incident and the apology that followed on Twitter.

“We appreciate the apologies, but let’s not forget the donors who felt potentially offended and dismissed by the spray paint written on the wall,” she wrote.
