NBC Justice Correspondent: SCOTUS Seems Set To ‘Cut A Hole’ In Abortion Rights

Longtime NBC News justice correspondent Pete Williams said the Supreme Court could deal a blow to abortion rights during his new term, which began on Monday.

“It seems very likely that the court will cut abortion rights big, if not completely overthrow Roe V. Wade,” Williams said on MSNBC Monday. “This is the case with Mississippi. The Supreme Court has ruled over the past few decades that states can restrict abortion during the lead-up to viability, which is said to be around 23 or 24 weeks, but cannot prohibit it during this period. ”

Williams was speaking in reference to Mississippi law that would ban all abortions in the state after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Opponents of Mississippi’s 15-week ban say it should be struck down under Roe v. Wade, who recognized a constitutional right to abortion before a fetus is viable, usually around 24 weeks gestation.

Supporters of the law urge the High Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Mississippi law, from a legal standpoint, poses “a direct challenge to Roe, and the state says the court should overturn Roe,” Williams said.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Washington, DC; Austin, Texas; and cities across the country on Saturday morning to protest recent abortion restrictions, such as those passed by states like Mississippi and Texas.

Late last month, the court voted to refuse to block a Texas law that bans nearly all abortions, a move the Liberals called “astonishing.”

“Presented with a request to ban a clearly unconstitutional law designed to prohibit women from exercising their constitutional rights and evading judicial scrutiny, a majority of judges chose to stick their heads in the sand . ” Sonia sotomayor, wrote of the court ruling in the Texas case.

The High Court is expected to hear arguments in the Mississippi case from December 1.
