NBC Superstore to end with sixth season after America Ferrera star retires

America Ferrera announced her departure from the NBC Superstore earlier this year.

And it looks like the big box sitcom is about to shut down for good, following the release of their star.

The show will end with its sixth season, which recently premiered in October, and will return from the mid-season hiatus on January 14 with 11 episodes remaining to wrap up the series.

Lisa Katz, president of Scripted Content, said in a statement, “ Superstore has always been an iconic NBC series that has never failed to make us laugh while thoughtfully examining the important issues that matter deeply to people.

“ It has been an amazing group of writers, producers, actors and teams to work with and we are extremely grateful for all of their contributions. This show will forever hold its place among the best workplace comedies we have a cherished history for.

Creator Justin Spitzer and fellow executive producers Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green said, “ We are grateful to Universal Television and NBC for allowing us to do 113 episodes of a show that we are so proud of and giving us the chance to work with such an incredibly talented group of actors, writers and crew.

“ We are especially grateful to the viewers who have stayed with us for the past six years (or discovered us somewhere along the way). We will do our best to come out strong and give you the satisfying ending you deserve.

Ferrera, who served as store manager Amy Sosa and is an executive producer, announced her exit from the show in February.

She said in a statement: “ The last five years on Superstore have been some of the most rewarding, rewarding and enjoyable years of my career. Producing, directing and performing with this wonderful team and this wonderful team has given me the opportunity to grow as a person and a storyteller.

“ I am so grateful to my partners at NBC and Universal Television for the support and belief they have always placed on the show, and I am so grateful to the brilliant Justin Spitzer for making the world funny, smart and relevant to Superstore and inviting me to be a part of it. As I begin the next chapter of my family and career, I wish my beloved Superstore family the best and continued success.

It happened just before the Ugly Betty star welcomed daughter Lucia Marisol in May, her second child with husband Ryan Piers Williams, 39, with whom she also shares her son Sebastian Piers, two.

Its final episode was scheduled to air at the end of season five in April, but the season was cut short amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ferrera instead bade farewell at the start of season six, appearing in the first two episodes as a guest star to conclude her character’s arc.

In a video posted on the show Twitter last month, she gave a touching farewell speech to the cast and crew, while leaving the door open to return.

She said: ‘I didn’t take a moment for granted. I am so thankful. Thank you all, and I hope to be back and see you before this is all over.

Superstore is a 30-minute sitcom about fictional Cloud 9 employees, also starring Nico Santos, Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Nichole Sakura, Colton Dunn, and Mark McKinney.

The workplace comedy has been hailed as a smart and relevant comedy since its inception in 2015, tackling immigration, the wage gap, health care, sexual assault and gun control.

With the show’s recent comeback, they’ve managed to deliver a humorous but topical version of the COVID-19 pandemic, spotlighting often-overlooked essential workers in a big box store.
