NBCUniversal is considering whether to remove its movies from HBO Max and Netflix and put new movies on its own streaming service, Peacock, according to Bloomberg.
Right now, HBO Max has an agreement to show Universal Pictures films around nine months after their theatrical release, and Netflix has a similar one to allow it to show Illumination Entertainment films, according to Bloomberg. These two agreements will currently expire at the end of the year, Bloomberg said.
However, Comcast-owned NBCUniversal has reportedly not yet made a decision on whether to pull the films down. Executives are also “open” to entering into new licensing deals with companies, which could mean movies stay where they are or end up somewhere other than Peacock, HBO Max, or Netflix.

The fact that NBCUniversal is even considering the move adds to an already hugely confusing streaming landscape, where it’s often a dice game if you find a movie on the streaming service you’d expect.
On the one hand, NBCUniversal brings its own movies (which include huge franchises like Fast Furious and How to train your dragon) to its streaming service would lead to some business synergy and increase Peacock’s value to retain or attract new subscribers. On the other hand, the licensing deals are lucrative and the company has to weigh that income against what it could get from Peacock in the long run.
NBCUniversal has shown a certain willingness to separate popular content from Peacock. It moves Office, one of the most watched shows on any streaming service, from Netflix to Peacock earlier this year. The success of this strategy is unclear, however, and based on Bloomberg report, we still don’t know if NBCUniversal is ready to make a similar move for some of its biggest movie franchises.
