The North Carolina GOP Central Committee is set to censor Sen. Richard Burr, RN.C., on Monday night for his impeachment vote – making him the last Republican to face the home state’s backlash after he broke up with former President Donald Trump.
Three committee members told the Carolina Journal that they expect the censorship resolution to pass.

“I absolutely support the censorship of Senator Richard Burr, NC for his vote on the impeachment of President Trump,” committee member Kyshia Lineberger wrote on Facebook on Saturday. “Senator Burr did NOT vote the will of the people and should be held accountable. This second indictment is nothing more than a witch hunt against a former president who is now a private citizen.”
The seven GOP Senators who joined with all Democrats in convicting Trump of inciting an insurgency were: Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska , Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

While some of the votes of other Republican senators were expected, Burr’s came as a surprise. Burr has said he will not seek re-election in 2022.

“Republicans in North Carolina sent Senator Burr to the United States Senate to uphold the Constitution and his vote today to convict in a lawsuit he said unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” the president said of NCGOP Michael Whatley in a statement.
Burr had voted that Trump’s impeachment trial was unconstitutional, but then voted to convict Trump.
“When this process started, I thought it was unconstitutional to remove a president who was no longer in office. I still believe that is the case. However, the Senate is a precedent-based institution, and being Given that the majority in the Senate voted to proceed with this trial, the question of constitutionality is now a set precedent, “Burr said in a statement on Saturday.

“I have listened to the arguments presented by both sides and considered the facts. The facts are clear. … The evidence is compelling that President Trump is guilty of inciting an insurgency against an equal branch of government and that the accusation rises to the high level of felonies and misdemeanors, therefore, I voted for the conviction, ”he continued.
Burr isn’t the only one facing backlash. The Louisiana GOP said on Saturday it had voted unanimously to censor Cassidy because of her vote. The state’s Republican central committee is expected to consider at least eight separate resolutions to censor it when it meets next month.
Meanwhile, Senator Lindsey Graham, RS.C., said Burr’s vote would make the former president’s daughter-in-law – Lara Trump – a shoe to win the 2022 Republican nomination to succeed Burr.
