According to the Food Safety Inspection and Food Inspection Service of the United States, J & J Snack Foods Corp. from Holly Ridge, North Carolina, recalls 56,000 pounds of stuffed sandwiches that may be contaminated with plastic that consumers may not see.

A North Carolina company has recalled 28 tons of "hot sandwiches" in stores across the country due to the presence of plastic, federal officials said Friday.
J & J Snack Food Handhelds Corp. Holly Ridge manufactures pepperoni and ham-cheese sandwiches sold in 9-ounce cardboard packaging, according to a press release issued by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Do not eat the products, warned federal officials. Throw them away or bring them back to the store where you bought them.
The USDA has not yet indicated on its website which retailers have sold the potentially contaminated products. The list is usually published a few days or weeks after the first alert from the ministry.
Publix, Walmart and Winn-Dixie usually advertise simultaneous food recalls or even before the FDA and USDA. None have the reminder listed on their sites.
The Charlotte observer could not immediately reach J & J Snack Foods' spokesperson on Saturday. The 46-year-old company also makes pretzels, baked goods and frozen drinks and desserts, according to its website.
According to the USDA press release, the company recalls products from these two products manufactured on February 19 and 20 that could contain "semi-transparent plastic":
- Package containing two stuffed pepperoni sandwiches marked "Hot sandwiches sandwiched with Bremer Classic pepperoni pizza", with the expiry dates of August 12, 2020 and August 13, 2020.
- Packs with two ham and cheese sandwiches marked "Hot Sandwiches Stuffed with Ham and Cheese Bremer Classic", also with the expiry dates of August 12, 2020 and August 13, 2020.
The products bear the establishment number "Est. 27231 "in the inspection mark of the USDA.
The problem came after consumers complained about plastic, according to the federal press release. The inspection and food safety service was informed of the problem on Wednesday, officials said.
No injuries or illnesses have been reported, according to the USDA release.
Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health care provider. FSIS is concerned that some products may be frozen and in consumer freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them.
