NC State pushes Boston College in overtime, 89-80

Nothing speaks more clearly to your face than the cold, hard step of necessity. NC State could not afford to lose at home against Boston College. And NC State did not lose against BC, but it took extra time. It'll wake you up.

State took a nine-point lead in the break and extended its double on several occasions over the first half of the last 20 minutes, but it turned out that Boston College decided to try to win too. And British Columbia had a late second period lead, made the last minute uncertain, and forced State to impose overtime as well as a sad smile to all of us.

The disaster was quickly averted, as NC State scored the first seven points of the extra frame and buried the Eagles with a 12-2 start. It does not have to be that hard, it does not take that much time, and it's kind of like those who let you scratch your head trying to figure out how the other team got a chance first.

Devon Daniels led all scorers with 19 points and he played a crucial role in telling us why he can make a difference in a given game. The state can be a different team when it is focused and plays ball with restraint. It's just a thing too rare.

Boston College shot much more of its offensive than it normally does, but the state deserves it: Ky Bowman needed 16 shots to score 17 points. He was only 2-8 out of two, which balanced at least vaguely his shot from 4-9 out of three. Once this thing was tight late, he could easily have taken a small sample directly to victory. That was his miss shot which led to overtime.

Phew.
