NCAA softball rack revealed for 2019 DI Championship

INDIANAPOLIS-The University of Oklahoma earned first place in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship while the 64-team group was announced today by the NCAA Division I Softball Committee. The Sooners will host the University of Maryland, in Baltimore County, an automatic qualifier native to East America.

Thirty-two conferences obtained an automatic qualificationwhile the remaining 32 slots were filled with very wide selections to complete the support. The top 16 teams have been ranked nationally and will play on campus starting this Thursday.

Team pairs were determined based on geographic proximity, with the exception of teams from the same conference who were not matched at regional competitions.

The Southeastern Conference led all leagues with 13 teams selected for the championship tournament. The Big Ten conference placed six teams in the championship tournament. Two teams make their first appearance in the tournament: Detroit Mercy University and Seattle University.

Since the beginning of the tournament in 1982, only 13 schools have been crowned NCAA Division I Softball Champions. 11 of the 13 teams will face in the slice of this year.

The committee made selections from May 10th to May 12th. This group of 64 teams was selected from 296 NCAA Division I institutions sponsoring softball. Of the 64 teams, 32 received an automatic qualification and the remaining 32 best teams were selected on a broad basis.

* The Big 12, A-10 and AAC softball tournaments were canceled due to adverse weather conditions and terrain conditions. The Big 12's automatic nomination to the NCAA tournament has been awarded to Oklahoma, the regular season champion. The AAC auto auction goes to USF, the highest seed remaining in the conference tournament. Fordham gets his automatic bid after winning the regular season championship.

The regional will take place from May 16 to 19 on 16 campuses. A double elimination tournament will be organized on each campus and the 16 winning teams will qualify for the Super Regional.

The Super Regionals for the championship will take place from May 23rd to May 26th on eight campuses. On each site, two teams play in a best-of-three tournament format. The winners of each site move to the NCAA® Women's College World Series (WCWS).

The teams were selected on the field of 64 teams. The top 16 teams were ranked in order and the remaining teams are associated by geographical proximity, except for teams from the same conference who were not involved in regional competitions.
