College basketball referee Bert Smith collapsed to the floor during the first half of Tuesday night’s Elite Eight game between No.1 Gonzaga and No.6 USC at Lucas Oils Stadium in Indianapolis. He received medical treatment while lying on his back and then left the field on a stretcher.

CBS Sports Rules Analyst Gene Steratore reported that Smith felt dizzy before he fell, but was in stable condition while being treated by medics in the locker room.

Smith appeared to be alert and responsive as he conversed with the paramedics, his arms folded as they led him to the back to examine him in more detail.

Play resumed with another official taking Smith’s place.

A replay shown on the TBS broadcast showed Smith with 3:45 p.m. left in the first half just outside the 3-point arc near the baseline facing action as USC let the ball go down the field in attack. As he retreated towards the baseline, cameras showed he collapsed directly onto his back. He was unable to catch up and his head seemed to take a hit on the hardwood.
