Nearly 30 other Americans were evacuated from Afghanistan via a charter flight, the State Department said on Saturday.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement on Saturday that a Qatar Airways charter flight left Kabul on Friday with 28 U.S. citizens and seven lawful permanent residents.
The announcement comes as the United States seeks to evacuate approximately 100 U.S. citizens who remained in Afghanistan after the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops on August 31.
Zalmay Khalilzad, the US envoy for reconciliation in Afghanistan, said on Twitter Other Americans were able to depart on a Qatar Airways flight on Friday, but did not say how many were on the plane.
The administration did not say how many U.S. citizens are still seeking to leave Afghanistan, but officials said it was around 100.
The White House said on September 10 that 21 US citizens were evacuated from Afghanistan. Nineteen of those citizens were evacuated on a Qatar Airways flight, and two other citizens took a land route with 11 lawful permanent residents.
The administration had said the day before that 10 US citizens and 11 US permanent residents had been evacuated on a separate Qatar Airways flight.
The Biden administration has come under bipartisan criticism for its handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, as the country quickly fell into Taliban hands.
Price said the United States was “grateful” to the Qatari authorities who helped coordinate the flights, adding that the United States “would continue to help American citizens and Afghans affiliated with the United States government to leave Afghanistan. “.
