The voice Season 19 just went live this week and already the season – which was truncated due to a late start due to COVID – is almost over, with the finale taking place in two weeks. While the series has been rightly criticized in the past for its live playoff bloodshed, in which four or five contestants made it home in a single night, Tuesday’s top 17 results show a huge eight the competitors have returned home.
Yes, The voice also sharply reduced the top 17 to a top nine last May, also for reasons related to the coronavirus – the pandemic struck in the middle of season 18, ruined everything and forced competitors and coaches to work from home. But this season has been weak, whether competitors are on a sound stage or in their WiFi-equipped lounges. However, season 19 is the strongest Voice season in recent memory, in terms of talent – so with the series somehow reverted to normal production, Season 19 could certainly have benefited from a slower, longer playoff round.
Either way, here’s how it all worked out on Tuesday: team quotas (another point that’s rightly criticized The voice) were still in play this week, with each team’s top-voted candidate advancing immediately, with each coach then saving a candidate, and each team’s best vote then remaining singing for the instant save.
In Team Kelly, R & B / gospel diva DeSz won the US vote – a surprise, considering Kelly Clarkson had two popular country genre singers, Madeline Consoer and Tanner Gomes, but maybe these two – Monday’s public vote separated. Another surprise was that Kelly, who usually enjoys taking on rival trainer Blake Shelton with a country singer (and has won the show twice doing just that), saved goth-pop singer Cami Clune instead. But in this very noisy season, Kelly explained that she wanted to strategically choose “someone that there is no voice for right now on this show, from a music point of view.” Whatever the reason, surprising or not, I was delighted with Kelly’s decision. But I wasn’t surprised (or delighted) when Tanner, a generic bro-country dude, won more votes over technically superior Madeline.
Teenage prodigy Carter Rubin was the American choice for Team Gwen (again, that’s no surprise), but Gwen Stefani, who also seems to enjoy the idea of competing with Team Blake as a country artist, has decided to go with Ben Allen, whom she had stolen from Blake. I really wish Gwen had followed Kelly’s lead and saved the glamtastic alt Goddess Payge Turner, who – like Cami – has been totally on her own path all season. At least Gwen didn’t save mediocre Joseph Soul, which had been my fear, but when Gwen weakly explained, “Hey, I’m just playing a game,” I really don’t think she had thought about her. strategy. Ben surely can’t win over the other country singers in Season 19. It’s a losing game.
Speaking of Team Blake and the country singers, America saved the husky troubadour Ian Flanigan, and Blake saved the slightly less hoarse troubadour Jim Ranger. Those were two smart moves, but the fact that prime-time-ready performers like Taryn Papa and Sid Kingsley made it home, while County Fair amateur family act Worth the Wait qualified. for the song Instant Save, was a parody. America definitely voted badly.
And finally, on Team Legend, it is the choice of the Americans, the opera singer John Holiday; The choice of John Legend, the most powerful Tamara Jade; and yet another contender from the country, Bailey Rae, who moved on to the Instant Save round. It meant that John’s hottest and most intriguing opponent, jazzy Chloe Hogan, was heading home. It wasn’t a surprise either, but it was certainly a disappointment. Chloe’s early exit was a perfect argument as to why this season’s playoffs should have gone on for more than three weeks.
Entering the Instant Save singoff, I thought Payge might stand a real chance, as the only non-country candidate among the four. Her cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” was sultry, elegant and artistic, if not quite the octave-hopping Save Me performance that she probably needed to deliver at this crucial moment. But “Worth the Wait’s” I’m Gonna Love You Through It “was a sharp, charismatic mess, seemingly unrepeated (the trio clearly fell apart under the pressure, and it was painful to see), while Tanner’s “Pickin ‘Wildflowers” was just cheesy karaoke. At least Bailey brought a soft, solid voice to his confident take of Lee Ann Womack’s “Never Again, Again”, so if voters wanted to save a country candidate – which of course they did – I’m relieved it was Bailey. (Side note: The show didn’t display its usual chyron with Instant Save voting percentages, so I wonder if that was a sort of embarrassing landslide.)
So, now we have the first nine. And while four of them are country, it’s interesting that only two of them, Ian and Jim, are on Team Blake – and neither of them represent the only other coach who has. never drove a country singer to Voice victory, Kelly. Will Gwen beat her fiancé with Ben? Will John finally win with his very first country artist? Hey, probably not. But Ben and Bailey could end up in the finale (with Ian and Jim, of course) after next week’s bloodshed – when the top nine become the top four. See you later.
