LINCOLN, Neb. (Press Release) – The Department of Health and Human Services has been informed that a medical worker in the Four Corners Health District suffered a significant medical event a week after receiving his first dose of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine . The individual is at the end of his forties. The Four Corners district covers Butler, Polk, Seward and York counties.

The incident will be recorded in VAERS, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, a national vaccine safety monitoring program administered by the CDC and the FDA. Whenever a death or an adverse event occurs after vaccination, the case should be reported to VAERS. This process allows the CDC and the FDA to closely monitor and assess any adverse event, for ongoing safety assessments. Just like the standard protocol for any significant incident reported in VAERS, it will be completely reviewed. The event occurred at the end of March and the individual received the vaccine in mid-March.

Dr. Gary Anthone, Chief Medical Officer of Nebraska, said: “We are truly saddened to learn of this event. It has been an extremely difficult year for the Nebraskans and in particular for the healthcare workers who have been on the front lines of the pandemic since last year. We will share the CDC review results as soon as they are provided to us. While we remain confident in the safety of the vaccine, we will continue to monitor these types of situations. I cannot speculate on this particular incident; however, underlying factors are more likely to contribute to medical events when they occur days or weeks after a vaccine is administered. I cannot stress how important it is for people concerned about vaccination, especially if they may have high-risk conditions, to see their medical provider.

To date, more than 405,162 Moderna vaccinations have been administered in Nebraska. Vaccination is the best line of defense against the COVID-19 pandemic.
