Talks between the Dallas Cowboys and halfback Ezekiel Elliott intensify, with the two sides seeking a new deal this weekend, announced Adam Schefter, ESPN's league sources. .
This momentum marks a change in the discussions between the Cowboys and their star runner. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones had said after his team's last home game on Thursday that it "was working as if it was going to miss regular season games".
Jones said that he had no deadline to reach an agreement with Elliott, quarterback Dak Prescott or wide receiver Amari Cooper.
With the approach of the start of the training camp, the Cowboys presented Elliott with an offer that would put him second among the highest-paid NFL defenders, behind Los Angeles Rams' Todd Gurley (average salary $ 14.375 million). The New York Jets' Veon Bell has the second highest annual value, at $ 13.125 million.
Elliott has not held his training camp in the contract dispute and is training in Cabo with Marshall Faulk's half-time Hall of Fame inductee. The latter told Ed Werder of ESPN that he was trying to put the middle distance back in shape.
Elliott led the NFL in two of his first three seasons, including 1,434 yards last season. He missed six games in 2017 because of a suspension, but still managed to 983 yards rushing.
