That didn’t leave much leeway in the fourth round, which saw Korda struggle to stay on top. At least a dozen golfers were well within reach of gold, prompting other leaders to play more aggressively. Korda took the opposite approach: Showing her nerves, she often hesitated and opted for a more conservative strategy. It turned out to be disastrous on the seventh hole, in which the American double-buged and completely erased her two-under lead. In doing so, she briefly linked New Zealand Lydie Ko – the silver medalist from Rio – and that from India Aditi Ashok for the first.
Korda immediately bounced back, birding the eighth, ninth and tenth holes, then held on to first place.
Ko, in particular, played incredible golf in the final round; she had five cents through nine holes. On the 15th hole she was tied for second – locked in a tie with Japan Mone Inami.
Just as Inami and Korda completed the 17th hole, the horn sounded – and an announced thunderstorm made its appearance. Heavy raindrops splashed across the camera and the golfers left the course 30 minutes late.
