Nerf maker Hasbro heard you loud and clear, Adam Savages of the world: you want to be able to fire foam projectiles for days on end, without carrying a belt full of magazines or constantly bending over to reload.
Today, the company is announcing Nerf Hyper, a new line of blasters that not only shoot harder (up to 110 feet per second) than any stock blaster, but also feature the fastest reloads in the world. company to date, thanks to a smaller foam projectile that takes so little space, you can install 40 inside a pistol-sized blaster. This is unheard of in Nerf. You can attach (or carry) 50 or 100 round rounds for quick reloading, much like a paintball gun.
Hasbro doesn’t yet have a firm release date for Hyper beyond β2021,β but we have three blasters to get started:
- The $ 30 Nerf Hyper Rush-40 is the 40-round pistol I mentioned; it’s a one-shot spring action where you pull the entire slide (including its built-in hopper), then pull once.
- The $ 40 Hyper seat-50 holds 50 rounds in a shotgun design that also features a slam shot; keep the trigger pressed and it will fire as fast as you pump. See it at the top of our gallery below.
- But the flagship product is clearly the $ 70 Hyper Mach-100, a fully automatic SMG design that takes D batteries and spits out foam balls from its 100 shot hopper. See it at the top of this article.
Note that none of the new blasters actually break records for the number of shots you get before reloading – the $ 100 Nerf Rival Nemesis, $ 100 Persians, and $ 200 Prometheus already featured hoppers capable of holding 100 or more Biggest Rival Balls from Hasbro. Rival was already capable of 100 feet per second, so 110 fps isn’t a huge jump either.
No, it’s the capacity / size ratio of these blasters that is really impressive. βIn the volume where you could previously house 25 Rival cartridges, you can now install 100 Hyper cartridges,β says Tom Warner, vice president and general manager of Nerf The edge.
Where fan favorite Persians barely put 100 in a big beefy SMG, unless you’ve invested in a spare hopper it might be easier now. The next time Nerf makes a big underlying cannon like the Prometheus, you could theoretically fire 800 rounds without reloading once. And not too long ago, a six-shot revolver was considered the state of the art in Nerf handguns.
And while you might end up spending on new ammo, you could pay a lot less per hit if you buy in bulk. While the 50 and 100-cartridge refill cans will cost $ 12 and $ 20, respectively, you can purchase a pack of 200 cartridges for under $ 30. That works out to 15 cents per shot – far less than the 27 cents in Nerf per Elite Dart fee, not to mention the 36 cents per Rival, 40 cents per Ultra, or 50 cents for each Mega Stinger.
Hasbro tells us that if there was any new material to be found for Hyper Bullets, they should actually fly further now, while still being able to bounce. No word on their curve.
It’s been over five years since the Nerf community showed Rival to be perfect for high-capacity, rapid-fire blasters, and the Nemesis and Persians were a great start, but Hasbro has also recently been beaten when it comes to high-capacity blasters. long range while still trying to sell us on his proprietary Ultra dart. But Hyper seems to be able to do a lot of things the Nerfers want at the same time.
I can’t wait to see where Hyper fits into the new Moss Blaster meta once the pandemic has receded, and whether or not the community embraces it.
